Point of View: Six Indie SFF Authors You Should Be reading

Colin Alexander

I thought I’d do something a bit different today, and share with you six Sci Fi and Fantasy authors you may not have heard of but whom you should definitely be reading. These are drawn from my own personal book reviews over the last 12 months. Here we go: Colin Alexander Colin Alexander is a writer of science fiction and fantasy. Actually, Colin Alexander is the pseudonym for Alton Kremer, maybe his alter ego, or who he would have been if he hadn’t been a physician and biochemist and had a career as a medical researcher. He’s been reading science … Read more

POINT OF VIEW: When Reviews Attack

head in hands - deposit photos

I just got the worst review of my writing life. I mean, truly brutal. They pretty much hated everything about the story. Technically, it was written four years ago, but I just ran across it this last week. It’s for one of my earlier stories, but it absolutely pulls no punches – the characters sketchy and poorly drawn, the story unbelievable, and – gasp – the world-building too sparse. It also called my writing that most dreaded of adjectives, the one every writer hates to hear. Unoriginal. I bring this up not to cast aspersions on the reviewer. They felt … Read more

REVIEWS: The Rising Tide

The Rising Tide

The reviews are rolling in. 🙂 Got a great five star review from Melanie at “Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words”: “There are moments when I wept, pages of high anxiety and suspense, times when I went as limp as a noodle when momentarily the action went slack, and yes, sniffled again when it all came back together in an astonishing climax! What a wild narrative ride this was! I loved every word of it.” Got another great four and a half star one from Pixie at “MM Good Reads”: “This is an amazing story, the world building, the character story … Read more

Five Star Review for The Stark Divide

Erin O'Connor

Just got a great five star review for “The Stark Divide” from Erin O’Quinn:   “I cannot begin to describe the lush detail, the mind-blowing invention, the beauty and uniqueness of Coatsworth’s world. Every paragraph is rich and delicious as red velvet cake, hard and believable as “Ship’s Bone.” From the interplanetary ships that eat and breathe solar wind and space dust…to the Dragons Reach mountains and the Far Hold… this world unfolds with infinite variety.” Wow. 🙂 See the full review here Buy Links: Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074G2NJP6 Barnes & Noble: https://bit.ly/2J78Dbz Kobo: https://bit.ly/2LWnSSp DSPP (Publisher): https://bit.ly/2FgBByQ

“Lander” is Red Hot

Lander-meme-03

Some more reviews coming in for Lander, and OMG they are making me cry: “Yes, it’s beautifully written. But it’s more than that. It’s vast. It’s huge on every scale you can think to rate a story. It hits home emotionally, it’s suspenseful, it grabs at you intellectually, keeps you thinking about all the possibilities that may lie in store, and yes, makes you anxiously await the final chapter… What joy!” —Melanie, Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words “‘Lander’ is the fantastic second novel in the ‘Oberon Cycle’ series… an explosive story that held my attention from the first page and … Read more

INITIAL REVIEWS: “Lander”

Lander Cover

It’s release day for “Lander,” and the reviews are starting to come in. I’m thrilled!” “I’m not sure I can do justice to this book with a mere review, but I’ll try. I loved the first book, Skythane, but Lander surpasses it… Oh, my goodness, I could not put this book down! … Very exciting, well worth the wait for the next episode. I can tell you no more without risk of spoilers. Sorry (not sorry)!” —Becky Condit, USA Today HEA Blog “Mr. Coatsworth’s world-building is truly outstanding, it’s not easy to create a world that feels so realistic and … Read more

POINT OF VIEW: Critical Acclaim and Crickets

Scott

Hey all, I am in the midst of the blog and review tour for “The Stark Divide,” the first book in the Liminal Sky series. So far, the reviews are uniformly good and even amazing. No writer minds hearing how someone couldn’t put their book down. * grin * But it all makes me wonder. Despite a huge blog and review tour (85 stops at last count) and great reviewer enthusiasm, the few indicators I can see tell me the book’s not selling as quickly as I’d like. Part of the problem is that I only have a few metrics … Read more

NEW REVIEWS: The Stark Divide

The Stark Divide banner

More reviews keep coming in – today, two more five star reviews. 🙂 Anne Barwell at Drops of Ink couldn’t put it down: When I read a book by J. Scott Coatsworth I know I’m going to be treated to a story with fabulous world building, and interesting characters. The Stark Divide has all of that and more. One thing I really loved about this story is that although there are romances, they don’t drive it. Also it is populated by diverse characters with differing sexualities IE gay, straight, bi, and trans, which is accepted by this society in the … Read more

The Stark Divide Reviews Part Duex

The Stark Divide banner

More reviews rolling in. 🙂 Lilyn at Sci Fi and Scary reviews it and loves it: The Stark Divide was a nice quick read. It was definitely a book that I didn’t want to put down unless I absolutely had to. It plays with some familiar ideas, but does so in such a way that it doesn’t feel ‘been there, done that’. In it, we’ve basically destroyed Earth, but we don’t have FTL travel yet, so we can’t quickly get to another planet. “I didn’t want to put [it] down unless I absolutely had to.” Naturally, that means we have … Read more
