Point of View: Informed and Overwhelmed

Scott

Have you ever gone to a really good con or retreat, and when it’s over, your brain is so stuffed full of information that you think it’s gonna burst? I just got back from the 2017 Dreamspinner Retreat. It was an amazing experience – I can still see the look of stunned amazement on Elizabeth’s face when she was presented with this beautiful painting by Paul Richmond celebrating how her vision for Dreamspinner rippled through the queer romance world: And the networking was fantastic, not to mention just having the chance to hang with old friends and make new ones. … Read more

Point of View: Some More Good News

scott-good-news

It was a good week. Mostly. First of all, “Skythane” arrived at my doorstep in the form of a small box of print copies from Dreamspinner. I love opening boxes with my new books inside, and this one was extra special – my first novel. And the good reviews keep coming in. 🙂 Then came the next bit of good news. My novel “Liminal Sky” was just picked up for publication in October by DSP Publications.  “Liminal Sky” is an epic sci fi tale with a number of queer characters, about the launch of mankind’s first generation ship built to travel … Read more

Point of View: Through the Looking Glass

A week ago, I was freaking out. My new book “Skythane” was about to come out, and a combination of a story rejection and a potential bad review had me pulling out my hair. After all, it’s not every week you celebrate your first novel, and it turns out that can come with a lot of stress. How a week can change things. The book released on Friday to a torrent of great reviews (thank you, one and all), and while it’s too soon to tell how sales will go, I’m in a whole better place this week than last. And … Read more

Point of View: Building A New Site

Queeromance Ink

Last month, something extraordinary happened. And I don’t mean in the sense that it was something great. Quite the contrary – All Romance eBooks imploded in a sudden and unexpected four day event that started on December 27th, leaving many readers without access to their purchased books and authors with little to no royalties for three months of holiday sales. I was one of the lucky ones, but only because I have very low sales to begin with as a fairly new author. But some of our author friends got burned for thousands of dollars in the collapse. A few days … Read more

Point of View: Getting Your Cover

Skythane

Hey all, I’m so excited this week to be able to officially share my cover for my forthcoming first novel “Skythane”. I worked with the amazing Anne Caine on this cover, and am thrilled with the results. We did hit a brief rough patch when the graphics department flagged it for being to similar to an earlier book by another author, but we reworked it, and I think it’s even better than before. It combines a romance look with a great sci fi background. 😛 The book is available for preorder at DSP in eBook and paperback formats. So how has … Read more

Point of View: 2017 Goals

2017 Writer Goals

Another year has come and gone. In some ways it was one of the ugliest years I can remember, and 2017 promises to be pretty bad too. But on a personal, writing-related note, it was pretty good. I had two novellas and two short stories published. I hung out with other writer folks at DSP, YaoiCon, and GRL. And I sold my first novel (and the first in a series, if all goes well). So what does my 2017 look like? I thought I’d share my goals with you, my faithful readers and fans. First, my publication goals: 1) Lander: … Read more

Point of View: Taking a (Little) Break

Scott - Break

Hey all, On Saturday, I sent “Liminal Sky”, my second novel, off to the publisher – a story that’s been in the works for three years. Then I sat down, closed my eyes, and took a deep breath. I have been running almost non-stop with my writing for months, as I have been struggling to finish and submit two novellas and a novel, dealing with edits for one of the novellas and an entirely separate novel, and running a blog tour too. Suddenly, it’s all done. It’s like the clouds have cleared, and it’s blue skies all the way, baby. In three days, Mark … Read more

Point of View: Things That Bring Me Peace and Joy

Scott

In the spirit of the season, and after a rancorous past few months, I thought I would share with you guys a few things that soothe my soul, in the hopes that they might inspire you to do the same. So here, in no particular order, are some things that bring me joy. My Husband Mark: We’ve been together for almost twenty five years. Hard to believe, I know, since we both look so young and beautiful. *grin* But I still love waking up next to him every day, and we still make each other laugh and snort milk out of our … Read more

Point of View: Writing Beauty in a Time of Chaos

Scott

Hey all, It’s been almost a month since my world was turned upside down. Many things I thought were true about my own country and fellow Americans were shown to be either blatantly false, or at best rosy exaggerations. My place in this society, which a month ago seemed newly safe and secure, has once again been thrown into question. In my little bubble here in Sacramento, nothing seems to have changed. Outside, it’s a beautiful (if cold) day. The mail still gets delivered into our box every day around noon. The paper still arrives on my doorstep on time … Read more

Point of View: Writing Interesting Characters

characters

Every writer has a weakness. Or two. One of mine is characterization. I came to this whole writing thing via reading lots and lots of sci fi and fantasy – really really long, epic fantasy – and so my great love has always been worldbuilding. I adore strange new worlds – Pern with its dragons and thread, Dune with sandworms and funny sand walking, and Asimov’s overarching Foundation and Psychohistory. So when I write my stories, I start out thinking high level themes, weird and wonderful planets, and devices of great power. Then I have to fill those stories with … Read more
