Author Spotlight: R J Theodore

RJ Theodore

Welcome to my weekly Author Spotlight. I’ve asked a bunch of my author friends to answer a set of interview questions, and to share their latest work. Today: R J Theodore (she/they) is an author, graphic designer, and all-around collector of creative endeavors and hobbies. She enjoys writing about magic-infused technologies, first contact events, and bioluminescing landscapes. Her love of SFF storytelling developed through grabbing for anything-and-everything “unicorn” as a child, but she was subverted by tales of distant solar systems when her brother introduced her to Star Trek: The Next Generation at age seven. A few years later, Sailor … Read more

Point of View: Making Connections

connections - writer brain

As I was posting the author spotlight this week for Morgan David, an author friend of mine who lives in Denmark, I was struck by the hand-knitted scarf he was wearing. I have one that’s very similar, made for me by Mark’s mom Helen before she passed away. It’s a similar color and uses the same knitting technique. I asked Morgan about it, and he said his own mother had knitted it for him. And suddenly my writer brain started making connections. Between his mother and Mark’s, two different women completing the same act for those they loved. Between Copenhagen … Read more

Point of View: Gay Gay Gay Gay Gay

Gay gay gay

I’m an out gay man. I lived for two decades in the closet, ashamed of who I was. I knew I was different when I was five or six, and by the time I was fourteen, I knew what to call it. Gay. And I knew what others called it. Queer. Homosexual. Peverted. And the “F” word I still have a hard time bringing myself to say. It wasn’t until I was twenty-three that I finally came out and claimed it – and stood before the world proud of who I was. I’ve never looked back. And yet, sometimes I … Read more

Point of View: Reading in Nostalgia Mode

A Brightness Long Ago

I’m reading a book. Which is not news, in and of itself, although regular readers will know that I somewhat famously went for years without reading any, due to my insane work demands and habits. But this is different. I’m reading an actual physical book – a hardcover, in fact – something I can hold in my hands that doesn’t disappear when I set it down (though it often does flip back to the first page). It was my birthday gift to myself – the work of an author I love that I can actually touch and smell. OMG, I … Read more

Point of View: Filling in the Gaps

filling in the gaps

Doctors read journals and take continuing education courses to learn the latest techniques for their specialty. Teachers attend seminars and learn new teaching methods to help their students learn better. Even artists often pick up new mediums and styles throughout their careers… how many periods did Picasso go through? Writing is no different – we thrive when we spend time in the medium that we write. I grew up addicted to reading. I would often read a new book in days, sometimes staying up until three in the morning to finish a particularly addicting tale. I read thousands of different … Read more
