Seeking his motherâs helpâwho is an OracleâSlate pays a visit to the Blackwood Pack where he finds the Fates have once again, messed with his life.

Exclusive Excerpt
I am so excited to be here and thank you for hosting my audio book blog tour. The exclusive excerpt I have for you today is from Shadow Voice ̶ Book 5 of the Blackwood Pack series and is the love story of Dakota and Slate, Fate Mates, who do eventually get their HEA but not before the Blackwood Pack helps save them. Nick J. Russo, an award-winning narrator brings the book alive with his talent. Enjoy!
Dakota couldnât help it; his laughter exploded, picturing the scene with all the honored guests. Finally he managed to ask, âWere you punished?â
Smiling at his mateâs enjoyment, he replied, âOh boy, was I ever! Looking back I wonder how my parents put up with all the crap I pulled. Steel was constantly trying to keep my plans from going too wild, but I was a lost cause. When he finally left for college, Iâm sure he heaved a sigh of relief, thanking his lucky stars he finally had some peace from all my antics.â Reflecting back on his childhood, Slate couldnât remember how many times he was in trouble for something he did and suddenly, with clarity, it came to him. âYou know, I think I was always getting into trouble as a way to protest my destiny. It wasnât until I began to work with Steel in Dire Enterprises that I understood the bigger picture of what we were doing.â
âIs that also why you didnât want a mate?â asked Dakota, softly.
Slate thought about Dakotaâs question, sorting through his mind to find the answer. âYes, in a way. When I was younger, I never liked the idea that I couldnât make my own decisions about thatâŠthat my future had been predetermined for meâŠand all I could do was to follow someone elseâs plan for my life. Having the Fates pick my mate was just another restriction I felt choking me. Luckily, I grew upâŠa little later than my parents hoped forâŠbut I did. Instead of viewing my destiny as a chain around my neck, holding me back from what I was sure was a better life, I embraced it and decided to enjoy the benefits that came with the job of guardian. When my brother found his mate, I could hear the happiness in his voice every time I spoke with him and realized I wanted that alsoâŠsomeone who I could love, protect and would be mine for the rest of my life.
âDid I think it would happen this fast? No. Steel had looked a long time before he found Jackson so I assumed it would be the same for me. Was I shocked when I discovered you were my mate? Absolutely! You could have knocked me over with a feather. Do I regret finding you? No fucking way! Iâm guessing the Fates have forgiven me for everything I did when I was younger. After getting over my shock at how easy it was to find you, Iâm floating among the stars right now, feeling for the first time in my life that I am whole because up until I met you, I always felt a part of me was missing.â
Slateâs eyes roamed over his mate, his body hungering to feel Dakotaâs body under his, but knew there still was a lot to say. âI havenât spoken to my brother or my father about this yet, but I want you to know, if you accept me as your mate, I wonât be traveling anymore. I havenât ever lived in a pack, but when Dylon was over in Tajikistan, I asked him how he felt about it. I was curious because I knew in all likelihood, my mate would belong to one. Dylon explained what it was like and how much he loved it compared to what he had when he grew up. He told me it was one of the main reasons he became an enforcerâŠhe wanted to belong to something bigger. He finally found it in the Blackwood Pack as did my brother. I saw the tightness of the bond between Cody and Colton when they were in Mexico and, while it wasnât that surprising because they were brothers, Steelâs tightness with them was. And thatâs when I made up my mind to quit traveling when I found my mate; instead I would find someone younger and eager to do that part of my job.
âWhen I saw you standing in my bedroom, everything became so crystal clear I knew in that single moment, everything I did before would pale in comparison to everything that came afterwards. I felt my whole universe shift on its axis as my heart sang for you, my soul was filled with joy and you filled my world with every color, brighter even than the sun. All I have to give you back is my devotion and love which I swear to the gods will be yours forever.â
Dakota studied Slateâs face as he thought about what he heard. Even though he was stunned when his mate addressed Dakotaâs biggest concern, he instantly trusted his mate and knew he was telling the truth.
Tour Excerpt
The sounds of the forest faded as Dakota lost himself in the pleasure of kissing his mateâs soft but firm lipsâthat was, until the sound of his growling stomach broke the spell. Breaking off the kiss, an embarrassed Dakota said, âUhm, sorry, I havenât eaten since this morning.â
âBabe, mine has been growling too; I havenât eaten since last night. Didnât you hear it?â
Dakota shook his head. âI guess I was a little preoccupied,â he said, shyly. Glancing around the glen, he realized how late it was. âHoly shit! I have to get home and make dinner!â Dakota said, stumbling, as he tried to get up.
âWhoa! Trust meâŠmy mother has made dinner for everyone, well, except for us.â
âBut Jackson will worry why Iâm staying out so late. I never told anyone where I was going.â
Grabbing Dakotaâs hand, he pulled him back down beside him. âNo he wonât, because I told him where you were and he knows I was headed out to find you.â
âDid you tell him weâre mates?â
âYes, do you have a problem with that?â
Sighing, Dakota shook his head. âNot really. It wouldâve come out sooner or later anyway.â
The resignation in Dakotaâs voice wasnât reassuring but Slate decided to not worry about it right now; instead he wanted to get his mate back to the house and then, feed him. âWhy donât we head back and Iâll make you something for dinner.â
Dakotaâs face brightened. âThatâs right, Colton told me you like to cook. Okay, do you want to shift and run back or walk back?â
âIâd prefer to walk back with you in the moonlight, if thatâs all right.â
Dakota thought it over and decided he really did want to spend more time with his mate. He knew they needed to talk about having pups and all of that, but right now, he just wanted a moonlight stroll with Slate. âThatâs fine, Iâd rather do that too,â he said, rising to his feet again, and offering his mate a hand.
Grabbing it, Slate rose, and slinging the empty backpack over his shoulder, led Dakota down the mountain on the dirt path heâd followed when he was searching for him. âIâm hoping you know the way back.â
âYupâŠjust follow this path until you get to a fork, then take the one to the right and itâll lead us back to the house.â
Walking in silence for a few minutes, Slate wished they were already mated so at least he could know what his mate was thinking, but he knew it would take some time before that happened because of the promise he made to his mother.
âWas Jackson angry I left?â asked Dakota, worrying about what he would find at home.
Slate stopped, turned around so he was facing Dakota, then grasping his other hand, he looked intently at his mate. âNot at all. Please stop worrying about it. I told Jackson you were my Fated Mate and I wanted to claim you, but I told you I wonât do that until you agree, okay?â
Dakota stared at his mateâs face, loving how the moonlight highlighted Slateâs features. Nodding slowly, he felt his worry disappear as his body was flooded with his mateâs love. Smiling in response, he said, âYou know when you do that, it makes it so easy for me to forget everything except you.â
Growling his approval, Slate said, âGood, now letâs go so I can show off my cooking skills.â
Giggling in response, Dakota happily followed his mate. âTell me more about the trouble you got into as a pup.â
Snorting, Slate said, âOnly if you promise never to tell anyone what a complete shit I was back then. Sometimes when I think back about all the crap I pulled, Iâm amazed my parents still speak to me now after surviving my youth. Half of it was spent going to bed early as punishment and my poor brother spent half his youth trying to talk me out of my crazy ideas. By the way, he never didâŠthe best he could hope for was getting me to make a few changes in the interests of protecting me from the danger that made my ideas so cool.â
âDid he get punished too?â
âSometimes, but usually when he came up with his own ideas,â Slate said, laughing. âMy mother told my father I was a bad influence on Steel the time we took her car and drove it into town so we could go to the fair.â
âWhy, cause you didnât get permission?â
Smiling broadly, Slate said, âNo, though we didnât do that either. My parents were furious because Steel was only twelve.â
âTwelve? Holy shit! Now I know why you didnât ask.â
âRight. We knew what the answer wouldâve been even though my brother could drive very well. The funny thing, it was actually my brotherâs idea to drive us and, of course, I was all for it.â
âWhat was the big deal about the fair?â
âWe heard thereâd be lions and elephants and since weâd never seen any, Steel thought itâd be the only time weâd have a chance to. So off we went and had a fucking good time eating all the different foods and going on rides. We never did see any animals, but the fun we had playing the gamesâŠand winningâŠmade up for it. You know, if it werenât for the games, weâd have gotten away with it.â
âI donât get it. How could games give you away?â
Author Bio
The first book I ever wrote was Dire Warning in 2017 and, much to my delight, it became an Amazon Best-Seller. Readers loved it and I was on my way to chronicling the Blackwood Pack, seven brothers who are gay wolf shifters in search of their fated matesâstories about love at first sight with twists and turns, angst and humor, romance and adventure and, of course, happy endings.
As my books began to be translated into other languages, I also became an Amazon International Best-Selling author and then achieved the honor of becoming an Amazon All Star due to their popularity. My tenth book, Darkness Master has just been published and audible versions of the entire series are in progress.
I love the M/M paranormal genre because it gives my imagination a lot of territory in which to roam. My mind can really run wild and come up with some amazing stuff when it doesnât have to stay inside the box.
My readers tell me they feel like theyâre members of the pack as the stories unfoldâŠas if theyâre right there in the middle of the action. Others tell me itâs like watching a fast-paced movie. My writing style pulls no punchesâŠreaders love it and are always clamoring for the next book.
Stories come to me as if channeled by my characters, all of whom I love (except for a few villains). They are eager to recount their lives, loves and adventures and are not inhibited when it comes to revealing steamy, sexy details.
I currently live in the Northeast and love the beautiful change of seasons, my husband, and our quirky calico cat, though not necessarily in that order. Iâm always happy to hear from my readers and can be reached through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or my website.
